Seeking Paint Removal Advice

$

My '15 VFR got stolen, and recovered by police (yeah!).  It was spray painted blue (a very bad job) including over spray just about everywhere (wind screen, instrument panel, handle bars, frame, pegs, you name it).  Spray paint looked acetone based, so I bought Goof Off (also acetone based) and did some testing.  It removed paint from the metal tank and plastic fairing without (it appears after 10 days) damaging the factory red.  Also worked on some black plastic and different metals (exhaust, frame, engine). I haven't tested yet on the wind screen and instrument panel (nervous).

Just wondering if anyone is knowledgeable about and has had experience doing this?  If so you were (a) successful in removing the spray paint, while not damaging the factory paint; (b) if you were successful in removing over spray from the wind screen or instrument panel; (c) if you used Goof Off or what product/technique did you use?

Appreciate any shared knowledge / experience here.  Thanks.

Gear Indicator

Sorry if this has been asked before (I tried search and didn't get any relevant hits, but that's probably my bad), but has anyone noticed any issues or faulting with the gear position indicator?  I have a 2014 (bought new less than a year ago) with around 7000 miles on it.  In the last two weeks or so I've noticed that the gear indicator is faulting and displaying a dash instead of a number.  It's happened three or four times, and hasn't happened until now.  I'm going to take it in while it's still under warranty, but was curious if anyone has encountered this, what's causing it, and if there are any easy fixes.  Not a major issue; just irritating and distracting given that I've gotten used to having it.  Funny how a superfluous feature is only notable when it fails...

Air Intake Flapper Removal and Tidy Up

Hi All.

Some thoughts on this one.

As the Variable Air Intake system has been removed from the 8gen 2017 models, was looking at tidying up some plumbing and hardware by removing this system. See attached and a photo of the 2017 air filter cover.

Stong winds + hill = toppled vfr

So last weekend NY experienced a unusually strong storm and I had me bike parked the wrong way round on a hill. Less than 600 total miles and the poor thing was introduced to the pavement. I was going to do the first service myself but now I'm considering getting it a checkup at a dealership or shop. Any recommendations on NYC wrenches are welcome. It dropped right side down, scuffed up the engine, bar end, exhaust, and popped The retaining washer off the break pedal. I got the washers back in place after a quick trip to Home Depot for the pinch washer pliers. Besides cosmetic damage the only noticable issues are throttle stickiness (probably pinched by the bar end weight), and slight missalighnment of the bars. I'm hoping the bar isn't bent but it's hard to tell. Any advice is welcome

After countless hours of searching the web for a tail tidy for a 2017 Honda VFR800F, with no luck, I decided to modify the original monstrosity that it came with. This mod took about 30 minutes to complete.

What kind of Oil/Filter do y'all use?

Hey guys, just as the title suggests.

First the filters...do you guys use OEM or aftermarket?  I've used K&N's on my previous steed (2007 GSXR1000) and it worked great.  However, I have heard some bad fitment/issues with our VFR's, though, so I'll likely stay away.  I was thinking an Amsoil synthetic filter or stay OEM.  Both are probably $$$.

As for oil...do you guys run the recommended 10w30 or use the typical 10w40?

10w30 isn't as popular, obviously, but I can still find some decent brands for full synthetic.

All opinions welcome!

Front rotor damaged

$

Hi all,

So I recently bent the front right rotor of my 2015 vfr800 in Canada. Several dealers say its 700 CAD for one rotor plus 100 CAD for labor at least and suggest changing both sides with costs up to 1700 with taxes. I decided to save that and do it myself (I'm new to all this too) and have been searching for the past 3 weeks.

I found only one rotor available in Canada. The Bike Master 972127 rotor (link below) will fit the 2014-2015 vfr800 dlx with abs but after receiving it, it doesnt have the screw holes for the pulsar ring (so assuming it's for the non-abs model).

Link: https://bikemaster.com/brake-rotor-front-hon-bm-5455.html

Probably going to return it but a bit stuck since I am all out of options now. Has anyone replaced their front rotors yet? If so, which ones did you get? Are their any other compatible models (cbr1000) rotors?

I found a topic here with a list of interchangeable rotors but it wasn't for the 8th gen.

I tripped across this today while looking for something else:

The Chronicles of Mr. Fish.  I'm still not sure that I'd trade my 6th gen for a 2018 8th gen, but I wish Honda would offer them in North America so I could at least feel conflicted.  Nice to know they're still selling them in Blighty.  I think Oz had a 2017 model ... not sure about Europe.

Hot weather fuel problem?

$

Hi all. Got a problem which is puzzling me, in the heatwave we're having here in the UK at the moment (I know lots of you across the pond will be amused at the thought of consistent high-20s/low-30s C being a heatwave but we're not used to it in our little islands) my bike has started to leave a film of fuel on top of the airbox when it's hot. No evidence of leakage when the bike's just standing but when I return from a ride and leave the bike for a while, if I lift the tank the foam stuck to the underside is wet and so is the top of the plastic air filter box. I've no idea where it's coming from. I thought it might be the heat building up pressure in the tank but I've checked the breather - blown down the pipe OK, fitted a spare pipe and blown up into the tank OK and out with the cap open. Also checked the drain hose just in case, it drains from the filler cap surround and out onto the ground as it should. I wipe it down, leave the tank propped up and it dries out until the next time.

Any ideas?

I'm going to order a oem honda top box soon.  I already have the oem panniers.  I'm not sure if I want to get the 31 liter box or the 45 liter box.  What size would you suggest?

Looking to source part without full assembly

I would like to buy, if possible, a replacement for the missing bolt cover/cap on my top-case carrier bracket. The part number for the complete assembly is 08L74-MJM-D10, but I can't find any information on buying spare bolts, caps, etc. Ebay and Amazon only seem to have complete assemblies, as does every part retailers I have looked at. Any ideas?

Can I use VFR1200 panniers on my VFR800 (8th Gen)?

Hi All,

I'm new to VFR'ing and new to the forum. I bought my bike (VFR800F 8th) a few weeks ago as a bridge getting me back into motorcycling (or biking pending on the audience). Absolutely loving her, under estimated every facet of her to the point that I'm looking to invest in her for touring. Herein lies the issue, getting bespoke luggage isn't cheap new nor is it easy to find on the usual sites - Ebay, Gumtree, etc. I've looked at the alternative suppliers, but it they don't really float my boat. There are a lot of adverts for VFR1200 panniers and I'm wondering if they are interchangeable between the models?

Your comments or suggestions will be much appreciated.
